Can An iPhone Cure Depression? [BlissTree] An estimated 20% of American adults is coping with a mental illness at any given time—and at least 50% of us own a smartphone. But can the latter actually help treat the former? At least some experts are speculating that “mobile therapy” might be an effective tool to combat mental illness among on-the-go Americans. More than 100 apps now offer some variety of mental health assistance, including apps that allow for ongoing communication with a doctor or psychologist. Start figuring it out with our Depression Quiz.)  The Bread That Never Goes Bad [BBC] If you’ve ever grabbed a loaf of bread, salivating at the prospects of a sandwich, only to find patches of mold growing on your rustic multgrain…then you’ll appreciate this new technology. An American company, Microzap, claims to have developed a mold-zapping microwave system, capable of keeping bread fresh for two months. The company envisions the device being used by bread manufacturers, and says it might also cut down on the preservatives currently added to bread in an effort to maintain freshness.  Stand-Up Desks Go Mainstream [New York Times] A growing body of research suggests that sitting all day is downright unhealthy. The solution, for those with an accomodating job, is to stand more often—sometimes all day—by means of new gizmos like desk treadmills and standing workstations. One office furniture company has seen sales of such contraptions soar to upwards of $40 million since 2004, with customers including major companies like Google, Apple, and Boeing.
